Let’s get to know the Solo Wargame better!
We’re returning to you full of fresh energy and plenty of new ideas. To start with, we’re launching a series of articles about our publishers, so that those of you who don’t know them yet can get to know them, and for others - as a reminder and perhaps even an opportunity to complete their collection.
To start, we’ll take a closer look at one of our publishers - Martin Melbardis, known as SoloWargame. He joined our team in 2024, and since then, his journey with Dice Pen has been full of exciting developments and achievements. His passion for wargaming and dedication to his craft have made him an important part of our growing community.
His passion for history is clearly reflected in his work. Rather than creating purely fictional scenarios, Martin draws inspiration from authentic moments in history, bringing them to life through gameplay. This approach adds depth, realism, and a unique educational value to his projects, allowing players not only to enjoy the experience but also to connect with the past in a meaningful way.
Let’s take a brief look at some of this publisher’s selected games.

If you have ever dreamed of stepping into the role of a famous leader and guiding your troops to victory, then in Thermopylae you have exactly that chance. As the ancient King Leonidas, you command the defense of the Thermopylae pass, leading 300 Spartans and several thousand soldiers from other Greek states. It is entirely up to your decisions whether you can maintain your formation system and how many men you are willing to sacrifice to serve the greater good.
Will you manage to endure more than three heroic days, or will you go down in history as the one who changed its course in one final, epic battle?
You need to turn back to the year 425 AD, when the Roman Empire, one of the world’s greatest superpower, is falling apart because of constant barbarian attacks, internal conflicts, and fewer and fewer resources.
Your moves, tactical decisions, and your ability to manage limited resources that will ultimately decide the fate of Rome. Every choice you make matters and will shape the course of events—whether you succeed in defending the city and preserving its legacy, or instead play a part in its gradual decline and final collapse.
This is a solo print-and-play wargame, which is set during the First Crusade, spanning the years 1095 to 1099, and centers on the effort to reclaim the Holy Lands from the Saracens. Built on a historically accurate map of Europe, it follows the real routes taken by crusading armies, which set out from one of four key locations: Paris, Toulouse, Rouen, or Boulogne.
In this Napoleonic Siege, a solo roll-and-write wargame, you will need to carefully decide step by step how each stage of the siege unfolds. Every action you take shapes the progress of your forces, from the early preparations to the final moments of the attack. You must plan your approach, manage your resources, and respond to changing battlefield conditions so that everything is ready at the decisive moment—when you finally launch the last, crucial assault.
This solo print-and-play WWII air command game, lets you step into the role of a Luftwaffe air force commander, placing you directly in the midst of some of the most significant military operations of the Second World War such as the Battle of Britain and Operation Barbarossa.
Another entry in the series of solo games, whose main storyline revolves around Operation Barbarossa—the largest and most important German operation during the war, whose failure ultimately determined Germany’s defeat in the entire conflict.
Each round of this game is a real challenge. The intensifying Soviet resistance, dwindling resources, and the approaching winter only make the situation more difficult.
War In The Pacific is a solo WWII game where you take command of the American forces, which launch a daring island-hopping campaign in an effort to halt Japanese expansion across the Pacific. It is entirely up to your decisions whether the United States emerges victorious or is forced into a negotiated peace.
You must act quickly and decisively, but the choice you face is far from easy: whether to invade the Japanese mainland in a costly military operation, or to rely on strategic bombing and nuclear weapons to force Japan’s surrender.
As you can see, the choice among the Solo Wargamer’s games is not easy at all. But if you’re a fan of that kind of games, it is an obvious option for you.
